Tim Steel is an internationally-recognised, award-winning stone artist based in Waipawa, New Zealand. He was raised in the coastal town of Pukerua Bay and is of Pākehā, Kāi Tahu and Kāti Mamoe descent. Influenced by a keen interest in taonga, the natural and urban aesthetics of Aotearoa, and the modern and ancient worlds, Tim’s unique style combines traditional and contemporary design interpretations. From his purpose-built home studio in Waipawa, Tim creates small, wearable sculptures and jewellery from hard stone and specialises in Pounamu. Every piece is made from start to finish by Tim and hand finished to an exceptional standard. His ability to select the right piece of stone for each design enables his work to showcase the depth of colour and beauty of the material he is working with. That, combined with smooth surfaces and clean lines, helps Tim’s work stand out as some of the most refined and unique carving around.
