Lost WorldJohn Stezaker
British artist John Stezaker is famous for his simple but beguiling collages made from old film stills, obsolete actor and actress headshots, and vintage postcards. His works seem to take us, at once, into a glamorous bygone era and into a parallel world of his own making. Stezaker says collage ‘reflects a universal sense of loss’ and involves ‘a yearning for a lost world’. But is he in thrall to his sources or a wilful manipulator of them?
Published by Ridinghouse, London, this beautiful monograph accompanies City Gallery’s touring exhibition John Stezaker: Lost World. It features essays by City Gallery Chief Curator Robert Leonard (introducing Stezaker’s work) and photography historian Geoffrey Batchen (on his use of vernacular photography), plus an interview with the artist by eminent British photography critic David Campany. It also includes extensive colour plates of works in the show.
